When did Winchester change from .30 W.C.F to .30-30?
I was in the gunshop yesterday and saw a model 1894 in .30 W.C.F. As I understand, this was the original name for the .30-30 cartridge. Does anyone know when Winchester changed the markings on their barrels? I should have noted the SN, but I wasn't thinking that far ahead.
BTW, the price on this rifle was $430. Seemed high for a '94, but if it is pre-64, I guess it could be reasonable... |

It will have some collector value. In 1964, Winchester went with cast receivers instead of forged, and I would imagine lost a few customers in the process.
http://www.leverguns.com/articles/3030history.htm "Winchester cartridges retained the .30 W.C.F. designation on their headstamps and advertising up until about 1946 after which they changed their nomenclature to .30-30. Interestingly, today it's called the .30-30 Winchester but it was Marlin & U.M.C. that gave it that designation." |

Thanks, great article. Is it a safe assumption that they changed the nomenclature on the barrels at the same time as they changed the cartridges and advertising?

Oh, if you trust Wiki it's 30 grains of smokeless and was named so by Marlin who didn't want a competing company's designation on a cartridge.
I wasn't there so I can't really stand on the veracity of Wiki's info. |
